| Monday, 23 September, 2002, 08:55 GMT 09:55 UK Barbershop holds on to box office top ![]() Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon in The Banger Sisters The low-budget comedy Barbershop has spent a second week at the top of the US and Canadian box office, according to studio estimates. The film, which stars rapper Ice Cube as the reluctant owner of his late father's barbershop, took $13.3m (8.5m) over the weekend, giving it a total of $38.8m (24.8m) in its first fortnight on release. It is thought that good reviews and word of mouth have contributed to the film's success. Among the week's four new releases, the best performer was The Banger Sisters, which entered the charts at number two.
The comedy drama, which stars Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon as siblings recalling their wild past as rock groupies, took $10.3m (6.5m) in its opening three days. Sleeper hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding added a further $10m (6.4m) to its total, giving it an overall gross of $124m (79.4m) so far. It opened in the UK over the weekend. Meanwhile the top five was completed by two more new entries - the action thriller Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever, starring Antonio Banderas and Lucy Liu, and historical epic The Four Feathers. The latter just took $7.1m (4.5m), despite boasting a glamorous young cast that includes Heath Ledger and Kate Hudson. Trapped, a kidnap thriller starring Charlize Theron and Kevin Bacon, rounded out the chart at number 10.
It was released with relatively little advance publicity - and no press screenings - with distributors Columbia keen to downplay the film's subject matter after a spate of real life abductions in the US. Although September is traditionally a slow month at the US box office, this weekend's takings were an improvement on the same weekend last year, when Mariah Carey's flop Glitter was released. Two major new releases should boost the box office next week - the Reese Witherspoon comedy Sweet Home Alabama and The Tuxedo, an action thriller starring Jackie Chan and Jennifer Love Hewitt. | See also: 16 Sep 02 | Entertainment 09 Sep 02 | Entertainment 03 Sep 02 | Entertainment 05 Aug 02 | Entertainment 12 Aug 02 | Entertainment Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
