American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson's first single, A Moment Like this, is released in the United States on Tuesday. The song, on the RCA label, is likely to sell in its millions if the success of the UK winner, Will Young, is anything to go by. "The result is a song that sounds pass compared to others on the charts right now by young women," said the BBC's Manoush Zomorodi. This debate is now closed. Please see a selection of your comments below. While I don't normally watch programmes such as American Idol, my interest was piqued by the huge amount of publicity generated over here by the English judge, who had a wonderful time slagging off what I thought were genuinely talented singers! As I continued to watch I have to say I was very impressed by the level of talent I saw. And by talent I am talking about the human voice as an instrument. I can only assume that the complaints logged here are due to a lower standard of ability in the UK? I noticed that the English judge did admit that the talent in the USA was much better than in the UK. In any event, I'd rather watch American Idol than rancid old rockers like Jagger and co who really need to retire. I say good luck to her. The girl obviously has talent. Perhaps the songs aren't the best but in time she will improve, given the chance. Just because she reached her dream by an unconventional route doesn't deny her talent. Just because she hasn't slogged away in back street bars for years doesn't mean she doesn't deserve everything she gets. As long as there are teeny-boppers, music like this will sell. And you never know - you don't get much more manufactured than the Monkees or more managed that groups like the Jacksons, and people are still singing Homecoming Queen today. Absolutely horrendous single. Not worthy of Kelly. She comes across as a nice enough girl and has an OK voice. She sang flat quite a bit on the TV show because she gets caught up in trying to be loud. The song is currently the best known cure for insomnia. I bought the Kelly Clarkson single today and I think it's great. Her voice is amazing, and I am glad that the American Idol creators found decent songs for her to record. Kelly is an amazing talent and I can't wait for her album to be released!!! I have had the pleasure of hearing Kelly and can tell you - that she is 300% better than will what ever his name is from the UK - and she is most definitely on par with Whitney, Celine and many other great women artist's - lets hope the UK will give her a chance Pass? Definitely. It can only be as a result of enormous media exposure that Will Young sold the pap he churned out in truckloads. Throw him in with every other wannabe and I doubt he'd do so well. I mean, look at Hear'say ... Just another yardstick by which we can measure the greed of the record companies and the manufactured tripe polluting our TV and radio that they continue to churn out. What's to happen to the undiscovered bands that play real music as the industry is continually diluted with these disposable singers? Where are the talent scouts? Instead we see the record companies throwing together a cheap TV show for which they charge the punters premium rate prices to make their short lived successes for them. Please, please, please do not buy this. It's the only way they may stop. Most Popstar, Pop Idol, fame factory TV-driven projects and artists sound best doing covers - Clarkson's track is written by a leather waist coat wearing, middle aged, chewing tobacco chomping, Swedish songwriting team responsible for some of the best and worst records of the last ten years - and I think this release is in the latter category. I haven't heard the single, and to be totally honest hope I never hear it. The sooner this manufactured rubbish stops denying so many hard working and talented bands that are repeatedly being pushed aside, the better. It makes me sick to the stomach that we are being force fed this pap, whilst so many people strive so hard to make a living, and are denied because of some stupid television programme. What was that guy's name. How the heck did he win. I had to just laugh when he sang. Don't you UK have other talent to spend money on. Kelly is good but I must agree three singles an album and it will be Kelly who? People can say whatever they want to say about Kelly, the single, and the length of her success. However it's the kids/teens that count. If millions voted her to be the "American Idol" then millions will love her and buy her single. Also, success does fade, no one will want to watch Britney Spears once she's old and doesn't sing pop music anymore. However Kelly has a remarkable voice and since she has that her success can't be taken from her. With the right songs she'll go far. For anyone out there who says that Kelly has no talent must be deaf. She has one of the greatest voices I have ever heard. I only watched American Idol to hear her sing. She is amazing and I am glad that she got the opportunity to be discovered and let the world hear her. I think that Kelly is great. She has such a beautiful voice and a great personality to match. You go girl! I'm English living in Canada so I only saw the American show but I thought Will Young was terrible when he performed on the last show - I can't imagine how he won?! However, I thought Kelly was by far the best singer and she deserved to win and she deserves much success BUT the single they have her singing is just awful and I hope she is able to overcome this and go on to real success on her own terms. Fiona Lamb How can anybody say they do not like Kelly Clarkson? She is beautiful, has an awesome voice, and appears to actually be a "real person". I was so glad to see that America does has class. "Manufactured" pop acts are nothing new; I don't recall hearing any complaints about Dusty Springfield or Elvis Presley in relation to 'real' bands. Kelly is a good singer, but one can hope that she will have some measure of control over her career so that she might have the chance to pick better songs than these in future. It's another prefabricated pop song from another prefabricated pop star. Coompletely devoid of any real feeling or substance, this girl's carreer will fall as flat as the vocals of her former competitors. The song doesn't sound anything different to all the other manufactured music out there. At least she can hold a note. Clarkson's first new song sounds like recycled Whitney Houston. Please turn her spotlight off and focus on some independent artists that actually have worked hard to survive in a record label controlled world and actually have musical talent. Under different circumstances you couldn't give this drivel away for free. She actually makes Kelly Osbourne sound good! The music industry wonders why they are having problems selling albums yet they turn out these manufactured groups. The song has no content, no edge, nothing new. I doubt her career will last unless she changes her style. | See also: 17 Sep 02 | Entertainment 06 Sep 02 | Entertainment 05 Sep 02 | Entertainment 05 Sep 02 | Entertainment Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
