| Tuesday, 1 December, 1998, 11:44 GMT Hollywood stars honoured for stage roles Kidman: Rave reviews for Blue Room role Two top Hollywood stars have received awards for their performances on the London stage. Nicole Kidman and Kevin Spacey were both thanked for their part in reviving its fortunes in a film-dominated age. Kidman's role in The Blue Room at the Donmar Warehouse - for which she won rave reviews - won her a special prize at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards for her "unique contribution" to London theatre. Kidman, who flew in especially from New York, said: "None of us expected the level of response and media coverage that The Blue Room received. "It was overwhelming and it was also wonderful." His acclaimed role in Arthur Miller's The Iceman Cometh at the Almeida Theatre, Islington, brought LA Confidential star Kevin Spacey the best actor award. Both stars gained kudos from the London productions, which played to packed houses, with audiences clamouring for tickets.
"The judges felt it hard, therefore, to overstate the contribution made to live theatre in general, and to that of London in particular, when a star such as Ms Kidman not only takes the risk of doing live theatre, but does it so very well. "It focuses the attention of an audience who might otherwise never give a thought to theatre from one year to the next."
Meanwhile Scottish movie star Ewan McGregor is currently packing them in at the tiny Hampstead Theatre with Little Malcolm And His Struggle Against The Eunuchs. The fringe Almeida Theatre, which produced The Iceman Cometh, was awarded a new prize for theatrical achievement of the year. Best actress award went Sinead Cusack, wife of Jeremy Irons, for her role in Our Lady Of Sligo.
The Iceman Cometh director Howard Davies was named best director and the most promising playwright was Mark Ravenhill for Handbag. Best stage designer was Richard Hoover for Not About Nightingales. |
