| Friday, 23 August, 2002, 16:02 GMT 17:02 UK Channel 5 relaunched as Five ![]() The new logo will reflect the change from 5 to Five Channel 5 is to be relaunched and known simply as Five in a major rebranding exercise. The channel will get a new logo and high-profile shows in an attempt to build a more mature image and boost its ratings.
The rebranding has been masterminded by design agency Spin, and will come as the channel celebrates its fifth anniversary. Channel 5's success is currently hampered by a trashy image gained by the scheduling of cheap movies and brash game shows, such as Keith Chegwin's one-off show Naked Jungle. It currently attracts about 6.5% of viewers - compared with more than 10% for its closest rivals, BBC Two and Channel 4. Director of programmes Kevin Lygo has recently been trying to close that gap by buying more arts shows, populist documentaries, US dramas and Hollywood blockbusters.
"Both Carol and Clive are very good at what they do and I'm sure they will prove to be a real asset to the channel," a spokesman said. Smillie will host a show in which an idyllic European holiday home will be renovated and offered as a prize to viewers. Dan Chambers, controller of factual programmes, said: "I've got really high hopes for this format. And it's fantastic to have Carol Smillie presenting for Five." She will continue to make programmes for the BBC.
"This is my chance as a mere mortal to meet, greet and interview a series of well-known people who are perhaps regarded as Gods by an adoring public," he said. They are added to a new line-up that will also include Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles' live weekday show, to be produced by Chris Evans, from September. The channel has also signed film deals to show the terrestrial premires of Saving Private Ryan, The Matrix and Eyes Wide Shut over the coming months. | See also: 01 Aug 02 | Entertainment 07 Jul 02 | Entertainment 28 May 02 | Entertainment 15 Nov 01 | Entertainment Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
