| Thursday, 12 November, 1998, 18:07 GMT Prince of palettes ![]() One of Charles' works on show at Hampton Court Palace Up and coming artists are having their work displayed alongside the Prince of Wales' watercolours at a new exhibition at Hampton Court Palace.
The paintings provide a unique record of Britain as seen through the eyes of the country's young people. They share the limelight with 50 works from artists who have been on royal trips with the prince, and 50 of Charles' most recent works, on public display for the first time. The exhibition marks his 50th birthday, and proceeds will go to the Prince of Wales' Charitable Foundation. According to Art Review editor David Lee, his works show an excellent handling of light and a newer, more free style when compared to his older pieces. 'Capable and competent works'
Prince Charles' development as an artist can be attributed to the influence of the artists who have accompanied him on royal tours for the past 15 years. They are allowed to sketch and paint whatever they want, and the pictures being exhibited show the intricacies of life on a royal tour, from attending official ceremonies to the nitty-gritty of life behind the scenes. But according to one of the artists, Susannah Fiennes, conditions are often difficult. "You have to have your wits about you. You have to use your initiative and find subjects that interest you, often under intense pressure between one official function and another. "There's the anxiety of not being left behind - when the prince moves, you have to follow him," she said. |
