Hollywood couple Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon have confirmed they are to perform at this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Robbins and Sarandon said on Friday that they would be staging a reading of The Guys - a play written as a tribute to New York firefighters affected by 11 September.

The announcement ends weeks of press speculation about the visit to the annual arts festival by two of the world's biggest film stars.

Meanwhile, Edinburgh's summer pop festival T on the Fringe, has announced that legendary 1960s singer Nancy Sinatra has been added to its line-up.

The Guys is based on a true story about how the writer, Anne Nelson, helped a grieving fire captain compose eulogies for four colleagues killed when the twin towers collapsed.

It was first seen in New York at the Flea Theatre in December, starring Sigourney Weaver and Bill Murray, just a short distance from the scene of the attacks on 11 September.

Weaver also stars in a film version of The Guys, which is set for an autumn release, possibly to coincide with the first anniversary of 11 September.

Sarandon and Robbins took turns to perform The Guys on the New York stage, where discounted seats were reserved for emergency workers from ground zero.

Sarandon is an Oscar-winning Hollywood actress, the star of films such as Dead Man Walking and Thelma and Louise.

Robbins is both an award-winning actor, in films including The Player, and an acclaimed director, including on films starring Sarandon, such as Dead Man Walking.

He has also directed eight plays, co-written four and produced more than 30 with his Los Angeles theatre group The Actors' Gang.

A recent production staged by the group was The Guys.

Nancy Sinatra, the daughter of screen and singing icon Frank Sinatra, is best known for her number one song These Boots Were Made For Walkin'.

She also sang the theme to the Bond movie You Only Live Twice, Sugar Town and Somethin' Stupid.

Among the other acts to take part in the summer concerts will be The Charlatans, Haven and The Stereophonics.
