TV awards shortlist 11 channels

Kirsty Young will present the award
The shortlist for the new channel of the year award for the Edinburgh International TV Festival has been unveiled.

All five terrestrial channels - BBC One and Two, ITV, Channel Four and Channel Five - have made the shortlist as well as six digital or satellite channels.

An award will be given for the best terrestrial and non-terrestrial channels at an event hosted by Channel 5 news presenter, Kirsty Young, on 24 August.

Non-terrestrial channels shortlisted are: E4, Sky News, Sky One, UK Style, The Discovery Channel and Bravo.

The diverse judging panel includes TV presenters Ruby Wax and Dermot O'Leary, comedian and actress Nina Wadia, advertising boss Matthew Freud and former Channel 4 chief executive Michael Grade.

The judging took place following a survey of programme controllers and channel editors from across the UK.

They were asked to vote for their best terrestrial and non-terrestrial channel other than their own.

"The meeting of the judging panel proved to be a very eventful and colourful session, full of surprises, not to mention a lot of raised voices." said festival director Sarah Barnett.

"We were lucky to have a great mix of people on the panel this year, all of who had really strong and diverse views, so there was quite a lot of healthy argument and debate."

The Edinburgh International Television Festival is dedicated to the broadcasting industry, featuring masterclasses, screenings and keynote lectures.
