The Golden Jubilee rock concert featuring stars from Sir Paul McCartney to Ozzy Osbourne, is expected to be a best-seller when it hits shops on CD, video and DVD.

The Party at the Palace show, which was watched on TV by 15 million people in the UK alone on Monday, is being rushed into shops while the memory of the superstars sharing the Buckingham Palace stage is still fresh.

The stars played for free

An initial run of 100,000 CDs is being put out in the UK on 24 June by record company EMI/Virgin - the same record company which released The Sex Pistols' God Save the Queen in 1977.

A further 100,000 DVDs and videos are being released in the UK on 1 July by a BBC label, BBC Opus Arte, with all profits going to the Queen's Jubilee Trust charity.

Those sales figure are likely to rise "astronomically", according to BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC.

CDs and DVDs of the classical Prom in the Palace, which featured Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Mstislav Rostropovich, and took place two days earlier, are also to be released.

'Massive hit'

There was huge interest in both concerts, which was watched by 12,000 people in the Palace grounds while another one million watched the rock gig on big screens outside.

"I think people will be surprised just how successful the CD will prove to be," said HMV sales expert Gennaro Castaldo.

"It should still prove a massive hit, and could top the compilations album chart when it is released later this month."

He said the "huge" interest in the CDs and DVDs would partly be down to the line-ups, but also because people would want to own a piece of Jubilee memorabilia.

Star-studded

DVDs and videos are going to be shipped to about 100 countries after up to 70 nations bought TV coverage of the event.

Retailers in the Netherlands have already placed orders for 20,000 DVDs and videos - and that country did not even broadcast the show.

The star-studded line-up of performers - which also included Tom Jones, Dame Shirley Bassey, Sir Cliff Richard and Will Young - all offered their services for free.

Profits from the releases will be channelled to charities including Barnardo's, The Prince's Trust, The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution and the British Commonwealth Ex-Services League.
