The new Star Wars film remains at the top of the box office charts in both the United States and Britain.

In the US, it contributed more than $60m (�41m) to a record $200m (�137m) total for all films over the long Memorial Day weekend.

In Britain, Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones took in almost �6m over the weekend, raising its box office total to �21.4m.

The film, starring Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen, has received mixed reviews but has enraptured hardcore fans and ordinary cinemagoers alike.

In the US, Spider-Man became the sixth most successful movie of all time after taking $36.5m (�25m) between Friday and Monday.

The blockbuster, based on the comic book hero, is now likely to end up as one of the top five films in box office history.

Spider-Man has taken $334m (�229m) in 25 days - overtaking Forrest Gump's $329m total to go to number six in the all-time list.

"The top five is in our sights," said Jeff Blake, head of distribution and marketing for Spider-Man's distributor Sony.

"We're not quite sure where it will end after that."

American cinema-goers faced a wide choice of new films on top of the two blockbusters over the Memorial Day weekend.

Insomnia, starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams, was third in the weekend's chart, earning more than $26m (�18m).

The murder thriller is directed by Christopher Nolan - the man behind cult hit Memento - and has received some of the highest acclaim of the year from critics.

Animated film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, which tells the story of the Wild West through the eyes of a young stallion, was fourth with $23m (�16m).

Jennifer Lopez's latest movie, Enough, in which she plays an abused woman who tries to escape from her husband, was a new entry at number five in the US, taking $17.5m (�12m).

Hugh Grant's About A Boy was at number six in its second week on release, with $10m (�7m), and at number two in the UK chart, taking a further �1.4m.

"It's like a magazine rack, there's so much to choose from," Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office tracker Exhibitor Relations said of the choice in the US.

There were four new entries in the UK top 10.

Comedy Not Another Teen Movie opened at number three, while children's movie Thunderpants was at number five, Indian movie Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam was at number seven and Hart's War at number ten.
