 | | Wednesday, 15 May, 2002, 10:41 GMT 11:41 UK New season for Barbican  The Barbican has played host to the RSC for 20 years Puppetry from the former Soviet republic of Georgia and the world premi�re of a Philip Glass opera are among the highlights of a new season at the Barbican centre in London. The new productions will fill the gap left by the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), which has quit the venue after 20 years. The autumn season, entitled Bite 02, will feature song, dance and opera from around the world. A new expanded partnership with the English National Opera will also be included in the line-up. 'Regret' The Barbican's artistic director, Graham Sheffield, admitted he was still disappointed at the RSC's decision to leave. He told The Guardian: "I regret the departure of the RSC - the manner of their going as well as the fact they left. "My principal regret is that those who should have been able to, could not see the potential of a genuine partnership between a great arts centre and the world's leading repertory Shakespeare company."
The company, which has its permanent home in Stratford-upon-Avon and a smaller base in Newcastle, will now move from venue to venue throughout the year. On the Barbican's website, a statement said it was an "awesome" responsibility to choose which performances should be shown for the new season.. It added that Bite 02 is a "heady mix of productions from some of the most influential artists working in the world today, as well as those heading the race to be the 'greats' of the future." The autumn season will feature the UK premi�re of a production of Georg Buchner's play Woyzeck, with music and lyrics by Tom Waits.
