They join Northern Ireland-born Liam Neeson (The Crucible), Billy Crudup (Elephant Man) and Jeffrey Wright (Topdog/ Underdog).

Rickman's co-star in Private Lives, Lindsay Duncan, is up for the best actress award. She faces competition from Helen Mirren (Dance of Death), Mercedes Ruehl (The Goat or Who Is Sylvia?), Laura Linney (The Crucible) and Kate Burton (Hedda Gabler).

Best play nominees are Edward Albee's The Goat or Who Is Sylvia?, Fortune's Fool - Mike Poulton's adaptation of Ivan Turgenev's 1847 play, Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses and Topdog/Underdog by Suzan-Lori Parks, which has already won a Pulitzer Prize.

Urinetown has been a hit since it transferred to Broadway last summer.

The Tonys are presented by the The League of American Theatres and Producers and the American Theatre Wing.

They are named after Antoinette Perry, a founder of the American Theatre Wing.

The ceremony will be held on 2 June at New York's Radio City Music Hall.
