 | | Monday, 6 May, 2002, 09:45 GMT 10:45 UK James Dean photographer dies  Dean was killed in a 1955 car crash Photographer Roy Schatt, best known for his portraits of movie icon James Dean, has died aged 92. His sessions with Dean, who died in a 1955 car crash, are his best known images from a career which also included work with Marilyn Monroe, Paul Newman and Grace Kelly. Educated in New York, he started as an illustrator for government agencies in the 1930s, under the presidency of Franklin D Roosevelt.
He also studied acting, and directed shows during World War II, while with the US Army's special forces in India. Schatt returned to photography in New York after the war, and director Lee Strasberg allowed him to shoot performers at the Actors Studio. His sessions with Dean in 1954 led to Schatt becoming Dean's tutor in photography. Schatt's pictures included the well-known "torn sweater" series, demonstrating Dean's moody manner. In 1991, Schatt sued the James Dean Foundation after photos from a 1982 book of his images turned up on posters, calendars and fridge magnets. He received a $200,000 payment.
