The actress will present the ceremony alongside comic actor Jack Black, star of recent Farrelly Brothers hit Shallow Hal. MTV president Van Toffler said the odd pairing of Gellar and Black should "make for an explosive and unpredictable show". Lord of the Rings is leading the nominations for the awards with its hopes lying in six categories, including best film. The MTV awards ceremony has a reputation for being a more irreverent affair, shaking off the seriousness of the Oscars.
Gellar has played demon killer Buffy in the cult hit for six seasons. Screen kiss She has also appeared in a number of movies including I Know What You Did Last Summer and Dangerous Liaisons teen pastiche Cruel Intentions. It was this film that saw her win an MTV Movie Award for best screen kiss for the embrace she shared with Selma Blair. Gellar will soon be in the highly anticipated live action adventure Scooby Doo, in which she plays Daphne alongside real-life fianc� Freddie Prinze Jr as Fred. Shallow Hal was Black's first big lead role but he made a name for himself as the slacker record shop assistant in High Fidelity. He also plays in folk-rock band Tenacious D, which became the subject of a TV documentary. The MTV Movie Awards are taking place on 6 June at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Villain Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood is up for best male performance for his portrayal of the hobbit Frodo Baggins, and Orlando Bloom, who played the archer elf Legolas, is nominated for male breakthrough performance. The epic is also up for best villain (Christopher Lee), best action sequence and best fight. Action movies The Fast and the Furious and Rush Hour 2 have received five nominations each. Animated feature Shrek received three nods, including the best comedic performance for Eddie Murphy, who supplied the voice for Shrek's sidekick the donkey.
Ren�e Zellwegger and Colin Firth are also up for best kiss in Bridget Jones's Diary. And Daniel Radcliffe's performance in the Harry Potter film was nominated for best male breakthrough performance.
