| Thursday, 25 April, 2002, 12:57 GMT 13:57 UK Channel 4 gets set to Rise ![]() Rise and shine: The new show replaces Big Breakfast Final preparations are being made for Channel 4's new morning programme Rise, which starts broadcasting on Monday. The last pilot show is being staged on Thursday for the replacement of The Big Breakfast. BSkyB and Princess Productions are behind the new show, which will feature seven presenters, in a high-tech studio with no sofas.
Rise will feature a mix of hard and soft news stories and topical items but there will be none of its predecessor's games. The presenters will have hand-held e-mail devices which will allow viewers to contact them directly.
He said: "This show is for people who want to know about Bin Laden, Beckham and Britney Spears." The new programme replaces The Big Breakfast, which was dropped last month because of poor ratings, after ten years on air. Debut The main presenter of Rise is Mark Durden-Smith, who has covered rugby union on Sky Sports since 1997. He is the son of Wish You Were Here presenter Judith Chalmers. MTV presenter Edith Bowman will cover entertainment news with Colin Murray, the face of Channel 4's programme strand 4 Music, taking charge of features.
Reporters Liz Bonnin and Henry Bonsu will also appear regularly. Sky News presenter Chris Rogers, who has also presented Newsround, will read the news bulletins. In its heyday The Big Breakfast pulled in more than two million viewers. Presenters Chris Evans, Gaby Roslin, Denise Van Outen and Johnny Vaughan got their big break on the zany TV series. However ratings slumped to 250,000 after a number of personnel changes which did not go down well with viewers.
