New 'national anthem' aired
Two old ladies dance to the new national anthem
The new anthem got an enthusiastic reaction
A band from Liverpool have marked St George's Day with their competition-winning "alternative national anthem" for England.

The stunt was orchestrated by a brewery to celebrate Englishness and raise the profile of St George's Day.

Fields of Green were picked out from a plethora of entries with their 1960s-style psychedelic soul number, England, impressing judges.

Brewer Charles Wells points to research suggesting one in three people in England would like a new or modernised anthem to coincide with the Jubilee and the World Cup.

In the event of England reaching the World Cup final in Japan on 30 June, one third said they would like Robbie Williams to sing it live.

Also popular were Lesley Garrett (24%) and Cliff Richard (20%), but Three Lions favourites Baddiel and Skinner polled less than 4% of the vote as did S Club 7, Hear'Say and So Solid Crew.

'Misty shores'

Competition organisers advertised in the music press and were deluged with entries, the winner playing the song live for the first time at a pub in Covent Garden, central London.

Entrants included lyrics honouring the future King William, praising the "misty shores of England" and indulging in John Barnes-style football raps.

The winning song featured the line: "The only place I want to see, always be my cup of tea... England!"

Lead singer Dominic Cooper said: "We wanted to create a song that would really capture the public's imagination.

"Our song is by the people for the people, and a real 21st century anthem."
