The Hindu Times, the band's first single for nearly two years, has received mixed reviews - but sold strongly in its first week.
The top three chart positions all changed, with N'Sync's Girlfriend taking the number two spot and The Doves at three with There Goes The Fear.
The rest of the top ten all slipped a few places.
The Hindu Times comes from Oasis's forthcoming album, Heathen Chemistry. Some illicit recordings from the new album have already appeared on the internet, though record company Sony says they are just "early mixes" of the songs. The band are scheduled to play in front of 120,000 people at Finsbury Park in north London on 5 and 6 July, just before the album is released.
The only new entries in the chart are Elvis Costello's new album When I Was Cruel at number 17 and Petula Clark's Ultimate Collection at 18. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Music stories now: Links to more Music stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
