The photograph, taken by Lennon's widow Yoko Ono and one of only six prints in existence, sold for �8,813. And another piece of Beatles memorabilia, a four-minute home video taken in 1967, sold for �5,288. The lots were part of a varied collection of show business memorabilia being sold at Bonham's auction house.
The original Lord Charles ventriloquist's dummy, recently re-discovered by its manipulator and owner Ray Alan, was expected to fetch �6,000, but did not sell. Some movie memorabilia - a Praetorian Guard costume from Gladiator and some theatre wallpaper from Moulin Rouge - also failed to sell. Original artwork But Charlie Chaplin's signature fetched �258, and a joint signature by Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh sold for �493. And the original artwork for the childcatcher's cloak in the hit film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang raised �564.
The rare piece of Beatles cine film was taken by chance in Newquay, where David Arrowsmith spotted the group filming Magical Mystery Tour. He said: "I was on holiday with my family and all of a sudden they went past us in a bus. "We followed them and then they pulled up at the side of the road." The film had been left in Mr Arrowsmith's shed for the past 35 years. |
