| Sunday, 14 April, 2002, 14:23 GMT 15:23 UK Wood helps pub theatre ![]() This is the second time that Wood has helped the theatre Comic Victoria Wood staged a charity gig for a cash-strapped London pub theatre on Sunday evening. The TV star held the fundraiser for Islington's King's Head theatre at the Royal Albert Hall. It is the second time that Wood has helped out the pub venue. She gave half the proceeds of her At It Again 10-show Albert Hall residency last autumn to the theatre. The rest of the profits went go to cancer charity Cancerch. Difficulty The King's Head is one of the oldest fringe theatres in the capital. It stages 12 shows a year, from revivals to first productions, and in the past 25 years, over 35 plays and musicals have transferred from The King's Head to the West End and Broadway. The venue has been in financial difficulty since the London Arts Board withdrew its 38,122 annual core funding in 1999.
A second London borough grant was stopped after that. But the theatre - founded in 1970 - has become a favourite among many British acting stars. Many, like Wood, performed there at start of their careers, including Gary Oldman, Hugh Grant and Kathy Burke. Wood, 48, is one of the UK's most successful comics. She became famous after winning the TV talent show New Faces in 1973. Her partnership with actress Julie Walters resulted in the award-winning series Victoria Wood: As Seen on TV and Dinnerladies. Last year she underwent emergency surgery to remove a growth from her womb, which forced her to cancel a number of gigs. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Arts stories now: Links to more Arts stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
