Eddie Izzard previously appeared off-Broadway

Dr Faustus is the debut production from the Natural Nylon Theatre Company, founded by Law, his wife Sadie Frost and actor Ewan McGregor.

If Dr Faustus goes to New York, the UK's Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG) will join with Natural Nylon to help produce the play in the US.

Izzard's show in the US would also be produced by ATG.

Managing director of London-based ATG, Howard Panter, told Variety he and Law were discussing just when the actor would be able to fit another stage run into his busy film schedule.

Hopes of landing Izzard for Broadway are still in the early stages, but Mr Panter said both sides were keen for it happen.

Actress Janie Dee is another British performer who could be heading to the US, reprising her West End musical role in My One and Only.

Mr Panter said negotiations were currently underway with British acting union Equity to secure her passage to Broadway.

Former model Twiggy made her stage debut in the show 19 years ago.

Denise van Outen can be seen on Broadway as vixen Roxie Hart in the musical Chicago.

She was offered the chance to crack America following her successful London run.

Broadway has welcomed a number of British actors to its theatres in recent months, including Sir Ian McKellen, Helen Mirren, Alan Rickman and Lindsey Duncan.

Many American actors see London's West End stage as an essential stop on their journey to becoming rounded actors.

Nicole Kidman, Brendan Fraser and Kevin Spacey all took wage cuts to appear in London.

Anna Paquin and Haydn Christenson can currently be seen in This Is Our Youth at the Garrick Theatre in London and will be soon be replaced by Oscar winner Matt Damon, Casey Affleck and Summer Phoenix.
