Emmerdale's Soapstars axed
Soap stars
The new family was chosen from thousands of hopefuls
Emmerdale bosses are axing the winners of the Soapstars TV show who won parts in the Yorkshire-based soap.

The five wannabe actors were chosen from thousands to become the newest family in the soap, with the auditions shown as part of an ITV1 talent search.

But the manner in which they landed parts upset the acting union Equity, which saw it as cheap gimmick to gain attention for Emmerdale.

The successful five - Dee Whitehead, Mark Jardine, Elspeth Brodie, Jason Hain and Ruth Abram - initially won three month contracts to appear in the soap, which were then extended.

After nine months in the show they have all been told by Yorkshire Television that they will not be keeping their roles.

The soap family moved to the Yorkshire Dales to work on the fictional holiday village.

But the park will become the centre of a tussle between more established characters, leaving the new family out in the cold.

Ruth Abram, who plays Jess, had already been told she would no longer be part of the soap and will be seen leaving the series on Tuesday.

Impressive acting ability

The remaining four will stay on screen until July or August.

Emmerdale producer Steve Frost said: "We have been delighted with all five of the actors from day one and they have all turned in very impressive performances.

"We can't fault their work and their impressive acting ability and screen success was reflected in the offer of two extensions to their contracts."

Whitehead, who plays mother Maggie Calder, said: "It has been a really exciting and enjoyable time on Emmerdale and a great stepping stone on to other things."

Soapstars followed a similar format to sister company LWT's ratings winner Popstars, which saw Hear'Say formed.

The pop group saw enormous success immediately after the show but their future appears uncertain after one member left, their first concert was postponed and record sales slumped.
