He said he was particularly pleased to help the Trust in its role helping 14 to 30-year-olds develop their confidence, learn new skills and find work, because he had battled with nerves during Pop Idol.

"Confidence is the most important quality," said Will.

"And if the Prince's Trust can use us to heighten its image and help others develop their confidence then it can only be a good thing."

Gareth added: "To be given the opportunity to help raise money for the Prince's Trust is wonderful.

"We all hope we are able to raise enough to help make a difference to the lives of some of the people involved in the Trust."

Pop Idols praised

The stars were approached to be ambassadors for the charity after visiting a project in Tower Hamlets, east London.

Darius will represent the charity in his native Scotland.

The Trust's chief executive Tom Shebbeare said praised the offer of help from the singers, who have recently finished a 21-date tour.

He said: "I was amazed when I received a phone call from Will, a few days after he had met one of our teams from Tower Hamlets, asking how he could help.

"It is that kind of commitment that really makes a difference."

A St James's Palace spokesman said Prince Charles hoped to meet the new ambassadors in the near future.
