| Wednesday, 27 March, 2002, 08:26 GMT Party people at Coogan premi�re ![]() Party on: Steve Coogan, Johnny Vegas and Ralph Little Comedian and actor Steve Coogan has met the man who inspired his movie about Manchester's music scene in the 1980s. Coogan met up with Factory Records founder Tony Wilson at the premi�re of Coogan's film 24 Hour Party People.
Coogan plays Wilson, who founded Factory Records in 1978 and was also a local impresario and TV presenter. The film's name comes from a track by the Happy Mondays, one of the biggest bands signed to the label. It will receive a special screening in Manchester on Wednesday night. Celebrities at the screening included Chrissie Hynde, artist Tracey Emin and comedians Keith Harris and Johnny Vegas. Suicide Members of the Chemical Brothers and Toploader were also present. Factory's most successful early band was Joy Division. After the suicide of singer Ian Curtis in 1980, the band became New Order, whose hits include Blue Monday, Regret, and True Faith.
Star of BBC sitcom The Royle Family, Ralf Little, plays New Order and Joy Division bass player Peter Hook. Wonderland star John Simm takes the role of Bernard Sumner, New Order lead singer since Curtis' death. Factory Records also had its own club, the Hacienda, which hosted early performances by Madonna, Oasis and U2. But despite being a force in alternative music for more than a decade, the label collapsed in 1992. The Hacienda closed five years later, and is now being converted into flats.
