Caine gets lifetime award

Caine: Down-to-earth approach to acting
News image
Film Actor Michael Caine has been awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in the first ever British GQ Men of the Year awards ceremony.

Caine has appeared in over 70 films - in that time he has gained a Golden Globe for Educating Rita and swiped a Best supporting Actor Oscar for the film Hannah and Her Sisters.

Hollywood has also recognised his lead work in the cult 60s film Alfie and the 70s whodunit Sleuth.

The English actor is famous for making blunt and practical remarks about the secret to his success.

"First of all, I choose the great roles, and if none of these come, I choose the mediocre ones, and if they don't come, I choose the ones that pay the rent."

David Beckham - GQ's most stylish man
English striker David Beckham was voted Britain's most stylish man - in spite of sporting a skirt in public earlier this year.

GQ magazine readers ranked Beckham ahead of his colleague footballer Ian Wright and Big Breakfast presenter Johnny Vaughan.

But fellow footballer Michael Owen scooped the award for Sportsman of the Year.

The popular Owen was cheered by the award crowd at London's Cafe du Paris whilst Beckham was booed - probably a result of his disappointing performance in the 1998 World Cup.

When receiving his award for Solo Artist of the Year, singer Robbie Williams jokingly gave thanks to his colonic irrigator "for showing me a brighter and clearer path".

Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer were named comedians of the year. The only woman to gain an award was pop singer Louise, who topped the magazine's Services To Mankind category.

Other stars who attended the ceremony were writer Irvine Welsh, former Coronation Street star Angela Griffin, EastEnders' Patsy Palmer, glamour model Jo Guest, singer Ian Brown and former cannabis smuggler Howard Marks.
