| Friday, 8 March, 2002, 17:02 GMT My Music: Ashley Slater ![]() Slater: Likes Miles Davis, the Beatles and Steps Singer and trombonist Ashley Slater first made his mark on the music scene in the funk influenced Microgroove. He came to wider attention as the frontman with Norman Cook's outfit FreakPower, who enjoyed a huge hit with Tune On Tune In Cop Out in 1995. His latest project is the loungecore-influenced Ashley Slater's Big Lounge. Lounge music - is it back for good? It's always been there. Not a lot of people know this but all music is always there, and the media just picks one out to highlight form time to time. What was the most recent album you bought? Now That's What I Call Music number - whatever the last one was called. What was the first record you bought? Chicago's Greatest Hits. This was in 1976, before they went all soft. Where do you most like listening to music - and why? In the car. My car has a mental stereo system in it and there is usually no-one else there to distract me while I listen. Are there any songs you can't listen to because they remind you of something you would rather forget? For some love-based reason, the song It Never Entered My Mind by Sarah Vaughan is a toughie. Which song by another artist would you most like to have written? I think Yesterday is a bit of a killer - great chord sequence, resonant lyrics, brilliant tune. Which song from the past 12 months is most likely to gain classic status? Can't Get You Out Of My Head - sung by Kylie, but sadly for her, not written by her. If you organised a fantasy music festival, who would be on the bill? Miles Davis, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Steps. Do you visit any music websites regularly? Emagic.de is a good one. Describe in no more than ten words Ashley Slater's mission in music. Be myself. |
