Alanis Morissette's first album for four years has entered the United States charts at number one despite a rush for CDs by the biggest winners at last week's Grammy Awards.

US top five albums

Under Rug Swept, Morissette's third studio release, edged out a US bluegrass film soundtrack that was the surprise winner of the album of the year Grammy.

Morissette sold more than 215,000 albums last week, just beating the soundtrack to O Brother, Where Art Thou?, whose sales jumped to 209,000.

Soulful singer Alicia Keys, who won five Grammys, saw her sales double compared with the previous week to reach number four in the chart.

Her album is one place lower than a new release from Australian star Kylie Minogue.

Canadian singer-songwriter Morissette, best-known for hits including Ironic and Thank U, had not released an album since 1998.

She has been one of the world's most popular female singers since her debut, Jagged Little Pill, launched her as a star in 1995.

Her latest release eclipsed Cher's new album, Living Proof, which could only enter the chart at number nine in the same week.

The O Brother soundtrack, which features a host of little-known folk, roots and country musicians, jumped from number 15 to number two.

It has been one of the success stories of the year and has now sold more than 4.2m copies in the US.

U2 - who won four Grammys - saw their latest album jump from number 28 to number 10.

Even India Arie, who was nominated for seven prizes but won nothing, saw sales of her Acoustic Soul album double to take it to number 14 in the chart.
