| Thursday, 21 February, 2002, 11:55 GMT Duchovny returns to close X-Files ![]() David Duchovny was in eight series of the X-Files David Duchovny has agreed to appear in the final episodes of cult TV programme The X-Files. The actor will reprise his role of Fox Mulder, the character he played for eight of the programme's nine series. He will also direct one of the shows last episodes leading up to the two-hour finale which will be shown in May in the US. Duchovny's on-screen chemistry with Gillian Anderson, who played Dana Scully, helped make the show a huge worldwide hit.
However Duchovny decided that after eight series he would leave and the programme makers drafted in Terminator 2 star Robert Patrick as his replacement. The last five episodes of The X-Files will tie up the show's long-running conspiracy and alien storylines. Success Chris Carter, who invented the concept of the series, recently said that he wanted the show to finish while it still had creative vitality. He said: "We want to go out on top - we wanted to go out as a strong show. "I'd like to think the show is still one of the most imaginative on television." The programme spawned a movie in 1998 and a second film is being planned. Both Duchovny and Anderson have enjoyed some success on the big screen in their own rights. He has starred in Evolution and Zoolander, while she has appeared in art house hits The House of Mirth and Playing By Heart. The ninth series of the X-Files starts on Sky One in April with BBC Two tentatively scheduling it for the autumn. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top TV and Radio stories now: Links to more TV and Radio stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
