The Basildon 27-year-old reprises her role as Roxie Hart in New York in March, a part she performed during a 20-week stint in London last year. Despite being famous for her raunchy screen presence on British TV screens, she is a complete unknown in America. She said she always wanted to be a "Broadway babe". "To come from the Big Breakfast to Broadway is truly an ambition come true. I never thought this would happen and only imagined it in my wildest dreams," said Van Outen.
Van Outen will return to the West End version of Chicago once her five-week run at the Shubert Theatre is finished. "I am excited to be returning to the West End. Playing Roxie in London was one of the happiest periods of my life and a highlight of my career," she said. Breakfast Chicago has been running for more than four years and won a Laurence Olivier award for outstanding musical production. Van Outen started her TV career doing traffic and weather on the Big Breakfast. She was soon promoted to main host duties, alongside Johnny Vaughan. The couple's on-screen chemistry soon had audiences on the show soaring. Van Outen left the show in 1999 but was persuaded to return in an ill-fated attempt to boost audience numbers. After again leaving the show, she went through a very public break-up from Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay last year. | See also: Top Arts stories now: Links to more Arts stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
