Science supremo to head BBC TV
Jana Bennett
Bennett: One of the key posts in British broadcasting
The BBC's new director of television is to be Jana Bennett, the woman behind such award-winning science series as Walking With Dinosaurs, The Human Body, Meet The Ancestors and Back To The Floor.

She succeeds Mark Thompson, who became chief executive at Channel 4 in December.

The director of TV is one of the most important posts in British broadcasting, with responsibility for everything on BBC One and BBC Two and, in due course, the new digital channels BBC Three and BBC Four.

Jana Bennett joined the BBC in 1979 as a news trainee, later becoming editor of Horizon and then head of the Science department.

Jana's US experience and success in the American multi-channel market give her an invaluable perspective

Greg Dyke, BBC Director-General
From 1997 to 1999 she was the BBC's director of production.

Walking With Dinosaurs was one of the most successful BBC factual series ever broadcast.

She left the BBC in 1999 to run the Discovery cable channel TLC in the US, where her job included responsibility for The Learning Channel.

Responsibility

She is reported to have beaten the former Channel 4 programming director John Willis for the BBC job.

BBC Director-General Greg Dyke described Ms Bennett's track record as "brilliant" and praised her work in News and Current Affairs and factual programmes.

"Jana's US experience and success in the competitive American multi-channel market give her a special and invaluable perspective as she returns to us and I know everyone will join me in welcoming her back," said Mr Dyke.

Ms Bennett rejoins the BBC in April.
