| Wednesday, 30 January, 2002, 12:04 GMT Sweden plans Globe ice replica ![]() The Ice Hotel is built annually around December A replica of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre is to be recreated out of ice in the Arctic climate of northern Sweden. The indigenous Sami people, also known as Lapps, plan to perform Hamlet in their native language for tourists and guests at the famous Ice Hotel. The theatre will be built by the same constructors of the hotel, which is rebuilt every year near Kiruna, and is expected to cost up to seven million kroner (544,800). The Norwegian Sami theatre group Beaivvas will perform a shortened version of the Shakespearean tragedy, running for 74 days from 24 January, 2003.
"There will be translations into English and other languages." The theatre is set to be built in Jukkasjaervi, a village 120 miles above the Artic Circle. Reindeer skins Weather conditions should allow the theatre to function from January to April and will be eight metres high, with a diameter of 34 metres. There will be 40 two-storey boxes capable of holding 10 spectators each with room for 100 standing. As with the London reproduction in Southwark, rebuilt in 1997, it will have an open roof. The original Globe Theatre opened in 1599, but was destroyed by fire. Audiences at the ice theatre will be given reindeer skins, infra-red heating and frequent intermissions to buy hot drinks from the ice bar. "Just imagine experiencing Hamlet and the northern lights at the same time," Mr Degerlund said. The Ice Hotel complex is built annually and features an ice church, cinema, saunas and ice-baths. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Arts stories now: Links to more Arts stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
