| Tuesday, 29 January, 2002, 17:07 GMT Queen plans Jubilee soap trip ![]() The Queen will visit Emmerdale in July The Queen is to visit the set of long-running soap opera Emmerdale as part of her Golden Jubilee celebrations. Her Majesty's visit to the ITV1 soap will take place on 11 July, when she will tour the fictional village in the Yorkshire Dales. It follows her successful tour of EastEnders' Albert Square at Elstree Studios last year. It comes 20 years after she first made a trip to soapland with a visit to veteran ITV1 soap Coronation Street in Manchester. The Prince of Wales went a step further when he visited the same show in 2000, when he made a cameo appearance.
Emmerdale is also celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. "We are very proud that the Queen should choose to visit Emmerdale in this, her Golden Jubilee year," said Emmerdale's executive producer Keith Richardson. He added that it was a great honour for everyone involved in the show's success and that it would be a privilege to host the Queen at a time when the country would be celebrating her reign. "It is even more rewarding that the visit should coincide with our own 30th anniversary," he said. Celebration Emmerdale - originally called Emmerdale Farm - began in 1972, with the first episode focusing on the funeral of Jacob Sugden, Annie Sugden's husband. In 1977, the fictional village celebrated the Queen's Silver Jubilee with a big party. The show spent most of the 70s and 80s in the daytime schedules, before moving to prime time in the late 80s. Emmerdale was revamped in the early 90s after poor ratings threatened its existence. The "Farm" suffix was dropped from the title and younger characters and sexier storylines were introduced. The show has been shown five times a week since 2000. |
