Wit and wisdom at the Globes
Robert Altman
Robert Altman gave a self-deprecating speech
The 2002 Golden Globe Awards had its fair share of glitz and glamour but the speeches lacked the notoriety of previous years.

Here are a few choice quotes from the evening:

"Good evening, I'm here representing that very small group of British actors who are not in Gosford Park."
Sir Ian McKellan, star of Lord of the Rings

"I don't know what a best director is, except that it is someone who stands in the same space with the best actors."
Gosford Park director Robert Altman

"I think it's time for us to celebrate life and live, and it's kind of fun to get up dressed tonight, I have to say."
Sela Ward, a best dramatic actress nominee for television's Once and Again

Sir Ian McKellan
Sir Ian McKellan joked about the reason he was at the awards

"Those of you who knew him, loved him. Those of you who didn't, missed out. We love you, Teddy."
Kevin Spacey toasted Blow director Ted Demme, who died on 13 January

"My hands are shaking. This is really, really special because I never thought I'd be in a musical - let alone win an award for one."
Nicole Kidman, who won a best actress award for Moulin Rouge

"A Beautiful Mind is just a movie, just a piece of entertainment at the end of the day, folks. But hopefully it helps us open our hearts, gives us a little more understanding, gives us a little more compassion."
Russell Crowe, who won best actor for A Beautiful Mind

"In a weird way, the best of times and the worst of times always come together. It's 2002 now, and I'm looking forward to this year."
Nicole Kidman
