Drama newcomers Alias and 24 also fared well at the ceremony, both of which have been bought up by Sky One to show in the UK.

The best supporting actress award went to Jennifer Garner for the CIA drama Alias, which debuted in the US in 2001.

Kiefer Sutherland won the best dramatic actor award for 24, the title referring to the 24 episodes which roll out in real time tracking 24 continuous hours of CIA action.

Powerful drama

Charlie Sheen cemented his comeback from drink and drug addiction by winning best comedy actor for his role in Spin City.

Stanley Tucci was voted best supporting actor for his role in Conspiracy as Lieutenant Colonel Adolf Eichmann during the 1942 conference which decided the fate of Jews in Nazi Germany.

The powerful drama also stars Kenneth Branagh and Colin Firth and will be screened in the UK from Friday 25 January on BBC One.
