| Wednesday, 16 January, 2002, 12:21 GMT Monkeying around at the Brits ![]() Monkey has become a collector's item ITV Digital's Monkey character is to make a guest appearance at this year's Brit Awards. The stuffed toy has become an icon and collector's item since he was introduced as the face of ITV Digital in its advertisements, alongside comedian Johnny Vegas. In fact the success of Monkey has outweighed the interest in viewers subscribing to the digital channel.
Zoe Ball and Frank Skinner will be co-presenting the event at Earls Court. But organisers have strongly hinted the monkey will be making a "surprise" appearance at the show. He is tipped to be backstage talking to artists and celebrities, adding a touch of humour to proceedings. Animated pop band Gorillaz have reaped the most nominations for this year's Brits. Controversy The band, founded by Blur's Damon Albarn, are up for six awards, while Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue and Dido are all named in four categories. There has been some controversy over the selection because acts such as Dido and Atomic Kitten have been nominated two years in a row in the best newcomer category.
And there have been raised eyebrows at the exclusion of Irish supergroup U2 from nominations in a year when they had sell-out world tour and a number one album. Acts lined up to perform on the night so far include Dido, Gorillaz, Kylie Minogue and The Strokes. |
