| Monday, 14 January, 2002, 08:24 GMT Few surprises at People's Choice ![]() Julia Roberts has won eight People's Choice Awards There were few surprises at the People's Choice Awards in the US as ER and Julia Roberts triumphed once again. Tom Hanks beat off competition from Denzel Washington, Anthony Hopkins and last year's winner Mel Gibson to take home two awards. The People's Choice Awards are voted for entirely by the public, who pick both nominees and eventual winners.
Julia Roberts, whose latest film Ocean's 11 has just been released in the US, won an eighth favourite actress award. Hanks' awards were for top motion picture star and motion picture star in a drama. Hospital show ER was voted favourite TV drama for the ninth time, showing that high profile departures such as George Clooney has not affected its popularity. Shared award Friends came out on top again in the favourite comedy category, with Jennifer Aniston collecting the female performer gong. The plaudit for best TV male performer was shared between Frasier's Kelsey Grammer and Ray Romano of Everybody Loves Raymond. Country singer Reba McEntire showed she had successfully made the transition into acting when she picked up favourite female performer in her new TV series, for the self-titled Reba show.
Faith Hill's talent got her noticed in the favourite female music artist category and 'N Sync won favourite group. Mike Myers was on hand to collect the favourite motion picture award for Shrek. Movies such as Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings and Monsters Inc were released too late to be eligible for this year's awards. The reality TV show voted favourite was Survivor: The Australian Outback. |
