| Monday, 7 January, 2002, 18:48 GMT Star Trek reaches for Sky ![]() The crew surround Captain Archer (Scott Bakula) The first episode of the new series of Star Trek will make its British broadcast debut on Sky One on Monday evening. Star Trek: Enterprise follows in the footsteps of the earlier series Star Trek; The Next Generation; Deep Space Nine; and Voyager. Alone among the Star Trek series, Enterprise is a prequel to the original programmes. It is set in the 22nd century, some 100 years before Captain James T Kirk and his crew set off on the first mission on their ship, also named the Enterprise.
The name of the ship is not the only element of the show that will be familiar to long-term fans of the series. The second-in-command on the Enterprise NX-01 - as on the Captain Kirk's ship - is a Vulcan. This time, however, the post is filled by a woman - Jolene Blalock plays T'Pol.
Other cast members include Scott Bakula, as maverick captain Jonathan Archer, Connor Trinneer as the chief engineer, English actor Dominic Keating, John Billingsley, Linda Park and Anthony Montgomery. Channel 4 viewers will be able to catch the new Star Trek series later in the year thanks to a deal with Sky One. Sky bid successfully for digital, terrestrial and satellite rights in the summer in Los Angeles following screenings. It then sold them on to Channel 4 - in preference to the BBC, to whom it had sold rights to previous Star Trek series. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top TV and Radio stories now: Links to more TV and Radio stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
