The soundtrack to space epic Star Wars has been named the greatest score of all time in a poll.

More listeners to UK radio station Classic FM voted for John Williams' music for the 1977 movie than for the soundtrack to classic drama Gone With The Wind.

More than 43,000 people voted in the poll for the station which will broadcast a countdown at 1600 GMT on New Year's Day.

Williams features four times in the top 30, with his work on Schindler's List (15), Raiders of The Lost Ark (24) and ET (29).

Top 10 soundtracks
1) Star Wars - John Williams
2) Gone With The Wind - Max Steiner
3) Lawrence of Arabia - Maurice Jarre
4) Titanic - James Horner
5) Casablanca - Max Steiner
6) Gladiator - Hans Zimmer
7) The Shawshank Redemption - Thomas Newman
8) The Godfather - Nino Rota
9) Some Like It Hot - Adolph Deutsch
10) The Sound of Music - Rodgers & Hammerstein

Classic FM presenter Simon Bates said: "This chart proves that John Williams is the undisputed master of the movie soundtrack."

Williams has been providing Hollywood soundtracks for more than 30 years, from Valley Of The Dolls, through to Jaws, Close Encounters and the latest Star Wars epic The Phantom Menace.

"I've always felt that writing themes for these little characters is great fun. The melodic identification of each one of the participants can be a great challenge for the composer," he said after the release of The Phantom Menace.

He was born in 1932 in New York and has worked on more than 75 films in his career.

Williams is tipped to win his seventh Academy Award for his work on the new Harry Potter movie.

After moving to London and then America, he composed music for more than 300 films and earned three Academy Awards for The Informer, Now, Voyager and Since You Went Away.

He died in December 1971.

The most recent film honoured is Gladiator. Han Zimmer's score to the 2000 movie, which starred Russell Crowe, came in sixth.
