But 55-year-old Haskell nonetheless entered the chart at number two with his romantic ballad - said to have been composed on a supermarket shopping trip with his mother.

Haskell, who once played with rock group King Crimson, saw a BBC Radio 2 play of his song lead to nearly quarter of a million advance orders copies for the record.

And Cliff Richard managed only number 18 with his medley Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World.

Kate Winslet's romantic What If - taken from the animated film, Christmas Carol, The Movie - did somewhat better, spending a second week at number 11.

Charity

The Tweenies, likewise, have spent a second week in the same position - number nine - with I Believe In Christmas.

Proceeds from the S Club 7 single are going to charity

S Club 7's Have You Ever inched up from seven to six.

On the album charts, Robbie Williams is celebrating another week at number one with his tribute to the swing crooners, Swing When You're Winning.

The album has sold about one million copies in a matter of weeks, and has become the second biggest-selling album in the UK in 2001.

Two other swing albums - Jools Holland's Small World, Big Band and Frank Sinatra's greatest hits collection My Way - are also in the album top 20.
