Britney Spears is anti-fur - that's a good thing

Her publicist said the star had merely offered to provide a photograph of herself - fully-clothed - for a Peta poster at a New York nightclub, promoting its new policy of refusing entry to patrons wearing fur.

Spears' publicist Lisa Kasteler said all negotiations with Peta were suspended after the reports.

'Naked'

"Notwithstanding the meaningful work that Peta does, we cannot be involved with an organization that would distort the truth," said Ms Kasteler.

Over recent years a number of stars have posed naked for Peta's "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" poster campaign.

Britney: "Feels strongly about animal rights"

Actresses Pamela Anderson and Kim Basinger, model Christy Turlington and singer Melissa Etheridge have all participated.

The most recent was Dominique Swain, the star of the 1997 remake of Lolita, photographed writing the slogan "I'd Rather Go Naked" on a blackboard. As with the other posters, the pose was side-on and discreet.

Peta campaign director Dan Mathews has denied he said Spears planned to pose naked.

'Anti-fur'

"We've never distorted anything," he said.

"We simply confirmed that we planned on doing a poster with her - we never said anything about nudity."

"If the downside is that the whole world knows Britney Spears is anti-fur, that's a good thing," he added.

Ms Kasteler said the singer "still feels strongly about animal rights" and would "find another organization to be involved with".

Spears stopped using a caged tiger and a live snake in her stage shows after criticism from Peta.
