| Monday, 10 December, 2001, 08:56 GMT Clooney's crooks oust Potter ![]() Ocean's Eleven set a new December opening record A remake of one of the Rat Pack's most famous films, Ocean's Eleven, has knocked Harry Potter off the top of the US box office charts after a three-week reign.
Clooney fills Sinatra's role of Danny Ocean, a smooth crook on a mission to steal $150m (�105m) from Las Vegas casinos. Ocean's Eleven took more than $39m (�27.4m) in its opening weekend, compared with $14.8m (�10.3m) for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, in second place, according to studio estimates.
Ocean's Eleven was made by Traffic and Erin Brockovich director Steven Soderbergh, and also stars Matt Damon and Andy Garcia. It has broken the record for the most successful December opening, which was set last year by Mel Gibson's What Women Want.
The stars have just given troops a screening of the film after a morale-boosting visit to a military base in Turkey. The Hollywood idols signed autographs, chatted and posed with American troops at a high security military base in Ankara on Friday, the day of their film's US release. Patriotic war movie Behind Enemy Lines has slipped to number three, taking $8.1m over the weekend, while fourth-placed Monsters, Inc has now earned more than $210m in total. The cinema world is now gearing up for the release of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, which gets its world premi�re in London on Monday and is expected to generate the same box office frenzy as Harry Potter did.
