A woman who survived the World Trade Center collapse is to give this year's alternative Christmas message for Channel 4.

Genelle Guzman was on the 13th floor of the south tower when it fell to earth and she lay in the wreckage for 28 hours before being plucked to safety.

The 32-year-old will compete with the Queen's seasonal message to the Commonwealth.

Ms Guzman follows figures such as Neville and Doreen Lawrence, the parents of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence, in delivering the station's Christmas Day address.

In previous years, Ali G, Jesse Jackson, Brigitte Bardot, Quentin Crisp and Rory Bremner dressed as Diana, Princess of Wales, have spoken.

Rescue

Trinidadian Ms Guzman will describe her ordeal in the 11 September tragedy, her rescue by firefighters, her battle to overcome injuries and the effect it has had on her faith.

Channel 4 commissioning editor Fran O'Brien said: "Genelle believes she was saved for a reason - she is determined to make the most out of her life and sees it as a gift - that's an inspiring message to take away after all the horror and the carnage."

The station's alternative message will be broadcast at 1500 GMT on 25 December.
