The Rolling Stones are expected to tour next year

In Germany it entered the charts at Number two and it was placed at Number nine in the Japanese album chart.

As the front-men for two of the world's best-known bands - The Beatles and the Rolling Stones - Jagger and McCartney have sold millions of records and commanded a worldwide fan base.

Newspapers have commented on modern music tastes and how Jagger now "can't get no Satisfaction".

Meanwhile critics have wondered whether Sir Paul must now "long for Yesterday".

US support

Whilst this is not McCartney's first solo collection, some critics have likened it to a demo album.

It was recorded on a 16-track tape with a minimal backing band and differs from the high-tech standards of other bands.

His charity single, Freedom, which aims to raise money for the fire fighters and their families involved in the 11 September terror attacks, has received strong support on US radio stations.

The release of Jagger's first solo album in eight years coincided with the screening of a 70-minute documentary, Being Mick, which followed the making of the album.

When shown in the US on the evening of Thanksgiving Day it attracted only 3.9 million viewers.
