| Wednesday, 21 November, 2001, 16:53 GMT U2 top greatest album chart ![]() U2's The Joshua Tree marked their arrival as a world force U2 have triumphed in a poll of the greatest pop album of all time - beating The Beatles. More than 250,000 viewers of music TV channel VH-1 sent in their preferences, making the Irish band's 1987 The Joshua Tree number one. The U2 album was a UK number one and sold more than 15 million copies worldwide.
The Beatles' highest entry was 1966's Revolver at number eight - the oldest record in the top 10. The most recent record, Madonna's 1998 album Ray Of Light, came at number 10. Classics Other recent releases in the upper reaches of the chart included last year's releases Sing When You're Winning by Robbie Williams at 13, and Coldplay's Parachutes at 23.
The results differ markedly from a VH-1 poll earlier this year. The cable music channel commissioned a group of journalists and musicians including Carole King, Britney Spears, Elvis Costello and Roberta Flack to come up with their own top 100 albums. Top were The Beatles with Revolver - and others artists in the top 10 included the Beach Boys, Jimmy Hendrix and Bob Dylan, none of which appear in the viewers' chart. Sean Hughes, panellist on BBC Two's Never Mind The Buzzcocks, will be presenting a five-hour countdown of the new top 100 albums on Saturday on VH1. | See also: Top Music stories now: Links to more Music stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
