| Wednesday, 21 November, 2001, 11:41 GMT Poor sales for Jagger's album ![]() Jagger is yet to have a major solo album success Rolling Stone Mick Jagger's latest solo album has sold just 954 copies on its first day in the shops. Despite a huge advertising campaign, the album had managed to reach only number 85 in the album charts. His previous work as lead singer with the Rolling Stones saw the band sell millions of records, with a worldwide fan base established since their 1960s heyday.
On the same day Robbie Williams' new album Swing While You're Winning sold 73,000 copies. News of the poor album sales will disappoint Jagger's record company EMI, who had seen the album as one of a number of strong releases which might remedy a recent profits dive. The singer has recently made a documentary about his life which will be shown on Channel 4 on Thursday evening.
HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo told BBC News Online: "Sales were disappointing, but we're expecting them to pick up after this week's TV documentary. "The album may turn out to be a slow burner." "Any release faces difficulty at this time of year - there are just so many albums out," he said. Charisma Jagger, 58, comes from Dartford in Kent and as the singer for the Rolling Stones became one of the best-known figures of the 1960s. His charismatic stage presence and unique brand of cool has been an indispensable part of the long-lived appeal of the band. The group have promised to reunite in 2002 for a 40th anniversary tour. Jagger did not make a solo album until the late 1980s, and none of his solo outings - She's The Boss, Primitive Cool and Wandering Spirit - has been a major commercial or critical success. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Showbiz stories now: Links to more Showbiz stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
