| Sunday, 18 November, 2001, 23:05 GMT Stars unite for attack victims ![]() Kevin Spacey led the celebrity event Celebrities from around the world have been performing at a fundraising concert in London for victims of the terror attacks on the US. Kevin Spacey kicked off the event at the Old Vic, with a rendition of The Beatle's Hey Jude. Other celebrities performing at the concert were Art Garfunkel, Simply Red's Mick Hucknall, Lord Lloyd-Webber and model Sophie Dahl. Dame Judi Dench, Jude Law, Des'ree, The London Gospel Choir and Cirque du Soleil acrobats were also taking part.
And among the celebrity guests were Chelsea Clinton, Bianca Jagger, Koo Stark and Vanessa Redgrave. The event was organised by a British, American and international community committee headed by Sarah Farish, the wife of the US Ambassador to Britain, William Farish. Tickets cost up to �525 and were completely sold out, with �400,000 being raised before the concert even began. Donations will go to the World Trade Center Disaster Fund, Open Minds and Medecins sans Frontiers in Afghanistan. The Unite for the Future event was seeing performances representing a wide range of entertainment genres. From the world of theatre, Kiss Me Kate star Brent Barnett - currently starring in the hit West End version of the musical - was performing a number from the show. Tony Award-winning choreographer, Matthew Bourne, was presenting his stage company Adventures in Motion Pictures. Initiatives Composer Lord Lloyd Webber was presenting his new discovery, vocalist Shonagh Dale.
The Unite for the Future event is the latest in a number of fundraising initiatives organised by stars from the world of showbusiness following the attacks of 11 September. Earlier this month, Sir Paul McCartney released a second single in aid of firefighters' families, only a week after his first charity single for the cause came out. In October, Sir Paul also organised a star-studded fundraising concert in New York. And at the end of September, hundreds of stars across the US took part in a cross network TV telethon called A Tribute to Heroes. |
