Crouching Tiger star receives doctorate
Chow Yun Fat
Chow Yun-Fat: Toasted by Hollywood after Crouching Tiger
Actor Chow Yun-Fat, star of Ang Lee's acclaimed film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, has received an honorary doctorate from the City University of Hong Kong.

The degree, awarded to the 46-year-old actor on Wednesday, recognised his contribution to Hong Kong as a role model for lifelong learning.

Chow, who has long been a big star in his native country, came to the wide attention of Western audiences when he starred alongside US actress Jodie Foster in a remake of Anna and the King.

Lee's Oscar-winning Crouching Tiger followed shortly after and won the Oscar for best foreign language film in 2001.

Speaking at the degree ceremony, Chow said: "I'm happier than Ang Lee. Ang Lee hasn't had such an honour."

But the actor also admitted that, despite his fame, he had been nervous before the ceremony.

"I have never received such a prestigious title," Chow said.

The actor ended his studies when he dropped out of senior school to help his mother earn money from peddling.

He went on to have several different jobs, including working in a factory, an office and an hotel before eventually turning to acting.

Since the mid-70s, he has appeared in more than 76 movies.

He has won numerous awards, including best actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards, the Taiwan Golden Horse Award and the Asia Pacific Film Festival in Tokyo.
