Berlin Love Parade to go ahead
Revellers on June 17th Avenue, Berlin
This year's event went ahead despite the confusion
Next year's Love Parade in Berlin will go ahead, organisers have confirmed.

Following huge losses and confusion over this year's famous techno festival, the city government has agreed a date of July 13 with the organisers.

The news will come as a huge relief to followers of the world's biggest dance party, which suffered this year when it was pushed back a week because of an environmental demonstration.

The event lost DM 1.5m (467,000) after sponsors pulled out amid the confusion over whether it would take place at all.

And the mess generated by 800,000 youths in Berlin's Tiergarten park, down from 1.3 million the previous year, drew strong criticism and cost more than 300,000 to clear up.

But city officials said on Tuesday that they are committed to hosting the Love Parade, which pumps millions of marks into the city's coffers.

Safety fears

DJs on 50 "techno wagons" made their way along June 17th Avenue from the Brandenburg Gate to the Victory Monument.

Police made 180 arrests, mostly for theft and drugs offences.

This year's British counterpart, the Newcastle Love Parade, due to take place the same weekend as the Berlin party, was cancelled at a week's notice over transport and safety fears.
