Both instruments, which sold to separate private buyers, made more than their estimates.

The Mark VI tenor saxophone by Henri Selmer of Paris had a reserve price of �2,000-2,500 while the soprano saxophone by Yamaha had a reserve of �1,000-�1,500.

Scott was known to have been very attached to these instruments and even joked about them.

"I've thought about making them nice and shiny but I thought they might make me look old," he once said.

Scott was a famed musician who created the Soho jazz club in his name with Pete King in 1959.

His own inventive style on the saxophone was influenced by US players Stan Getz and Sonny Rollins.

Ronnie Scott's has since become a haven for jazz lovers and a centre for aspiring new musicians.

Scott, who died in 1996, often performed at the club, as did a list of jazz celebrities including Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald and Jimi Hendrix.
