| Friday, 16 November, 2001, 15:21 GMT Stone rolls alone ![]() Jagger may be missing the Richards riffs By BBC News Online's Mike Smartt Call them pop icons or rock dinosaurs, they are all at it. Elton John has come up with his best-received album for ages, The Who got together again for the Twin Towers concert in New York and Macca has a waxing out this week too. Now here is old rubber lips with a new solo collection. So why is Mick Jagger releasing his first solo effort since 1993's Wandering Spirit? He certainly has a bob or two. The last Rolling Stones world tour must have grossed zillions. And there is no shortage of parties and clubs to go to and young ladies to squire - though, reportedly, all that kind of thing is in the past.
Collaborators include Bono of U2, Lenny Kravitz and Pete Townshend. So, is it any good? Well, with the kind of team Jagger can summon into the studio, it should be. And it is, of its sort. Not even the most ardent Stones fan would claim that Mick's voice is outstanding but years of using it to belt out the best rock and roll songs ever put together - most written by Jagger himself and Keith Richards - have taught the old thing a trick or two.
Some tracks, like Lucky Day, could be straight off a more recent Stones effort. But what it does miss are the Richards riffs. This album is definitely a vehicle for the Jagger ego though where it will get any airplay is anyone's guess. The racier side of BBC Radio 2 probably. And when it comes to what to spend your hard-earned cash on, this cannot be high on many wish lists. There is so much else out there that is new and refreshing and so much that is old and familiar - and this falls right inbetween. Most of Goddess In The Doorway would be guaranteed to get people out of their seats at a party. The trouble is, Satisfaction would do it so much better. Goddess in the Doorway is released by Virgin on 20 November. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Reviews stories now: Links to more Reviews stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
