Beckham 'to star' in Branagh play
Victoria Beckham
Beckham: Set to become the butt of comics' jokes
Pop stars Victoria Beckham and Kylie Minogue are among the stars set to appear in director Kenneth Branagh's new play in London's West End, according to reports.

Comedy The Play Wot I Wrote is a homage to the late comic duo Morecambe and Wise and features some of their original scripts.

One of the highlights of the show, which opens in London in just over a week, is that a "surprise" star guest will take part each night.

Beckham, Minogue and other stars were attracted to the show by Branagh, reports the The Observer.

And they will take part despite knowing that, as the "guest", they will have to be the butt of the comedians' jokes - as in the duo's hit BBC TV shows.

A spokesman for the play's production company told the paper that celebrities were scrambling to take part.

"People are queuing up to be in it," David Pugh said.

"We have 28 stars who will play at least eight performances, although one or two will do single performances."

The other star names said to have been lined up - or to be in talks - include actors Ricard E Grant, Keanu Reeves and Jude Law, model Naomi Campbell and comedian Frank Skinner.

Stars that were guests on the real Morecambe and Wise shows during the 70s have not been asked to take part.

The producers are said to want to keep the feel of the play "contemporary".

Loved

The Play Wot I Wrote stars comedians Hamish McColl and Sean Foley.

They start by playing themselves but eventually turn into Morecambe and Wise.

Morecambe and Wise were two of Britain's best-loved comics and repeats of their shows remain a strong draw for audiences.

Ernie Wise died in 1999, 15 years after his comedy partner Eric Morecambe passed away.

They were best known for their inventive comedy sketches, song and dance routines, and appearances from stars such as Shirley Bassey.

Branagh is one of the most respected British actors and directors, who made his name first as a stage star before moving to Hollywood.

He directed well-received films such as Henry V and Hamlet ,as well as appearing in movies including Celebrity and Frankenstein.
