Meanwhile, Jackson is also preparing to take on the album charts in the UK with the release on Monday 29 October of his new album Invincible.

The long-awaited album is his first collection of totally new studio material in six years.

Bosses at his record label Epic hope the album will return Jackson to the top of the charts even though the single You Rock My World, taken from the album, failed to reach number one.

Dave Glew, group chairman of Epic Records, commented: "As a singer, composer, producer, arranger and musician, Michael Jackson is one of the most talented and influential artists in the history of recorded music."

Fans of the singer have already had a sneak preview of the album when it was made available over the internet for a limited period of 24 hours from Friday to Saturday.

The performer also went online for a web chat.

The whole online event was billed as a "listening party".

Invincible is Jackson's first album of original material since the 1991 release Dangerous and has cost a reported $30m (�21m).

Delays occurred when Jackson was forced to choose the final 16 tracks from a total of 60 he had recorded.

Although his Thriller album is the biggest selling long-player of all time, critics are concerned that after such a long break he will no longer be the record industry's dream ticket.
